Bones 20th Anniversary Exhibit – Part 1

Animation studio BONES, known for their work on titles ranging from the Cowboy Bebop movie to Full Metal Alchemist and My Hero Academia,  is currently holding a 20th Anniversary Exhibit at the Tokyo Anime Center in DNP Plaza. Each part of the exhibit will cover different shows that the studio worked on, with Part 1 having finished yesterday and Part 2 opening tomorrow.

Entrance to the exhibit is 1000yen and photography is permitted. Here’s a few pics from Part 1.

Walkure Cafe 2018

The Walkure Cafe 2018 opened yesterday at Harajuku’s AreaQ. Similar to last year’s Walkure Cafe, this year’s focuses on the recently released Bluray of Walkure’s 3rd Live and features original merchandise, video interviews with Walkure and a collaboration menu put together by the girls themselves.

Due to the video footage playing constantly throughout the cafe, photographs were only allowed in a select few areas. The following are a few that the SpeakerPODcast Crew managed to get.

The Walkure Cafe is open until November 25th and an online ticket/booking is generally necessary to enter.

Wings of Honneamise Exhibit

Hachioji City Yume Museum is currently holding an exhibit dedicated to the 1987 debut animated film from Gainax, the Wings of Honneamise. Titled “Royal Space Force: Wings of Honneamise – A Creative Path to the SF Animation Film“, the exhibit covers all aspects of the film, from pre-production notes and materials, to character and mechanical designs, across a whopping 4 rooms – 3 exhibition rooms and 1 screening room for the film which is played several times each day.

The exhibit runs from September 14 through to November 11, 2018 and photography is permitted. The following is a gallery of photos we took at the exhibit but is far from comprehensive, so if you are in Japan while it’s still on, be sure to check it out!

DORO OFF VIII

The 8th DORO OFF model exhibit was held on September 22-23 in its usual location in Asakusabashi, Tokyo.

As usual, the exhibit showcased primarily science fiction based models and dioramas by enthusiast builders. Yamato once again received considerable representation this year, second only to Star Wars. The showpiece of the exhibit, however, wasn’t anime related at all – a life-sized “breathing” mannequin with a Face-hugger from the movie Alien was quite possibly the most impressive original item on display, looking all the more realistic when organizers turned down the lights and pulled the curtains closed during set periods of the day.

Macross & Macross F Cafe/Art Gallery

In the lead to the Macross Frontier 10th Anniversary Orchestra on September 8-9, Mitsukoshi Department Store (Main Branch) is holding a combined collaboration cafe/mini-gallery dedicated to both Macross Frontier and the original SDF Macross. The cafe will run from September 5-17, 2018.

The SpeakerPODcast Crew were fortunate enough to be able to check out the cafe on opening day and will be covering it in-depth in a future podcast. While the majority of items on display were things that we had seen before, what really struck us was the amount of space and respect given to the original the original Macross (although much of the art and items on display were actually from DYRL). The cafe was literally split 50/50 between Macross Frontier and the original, with themed food and drinks dedicated to each. This is quite possibly the closest thing we will ever get to a dedicated SDF Macross collaboration cafe.

But enough about that. Bring on the pics!
