Macross: The Art 1982-2018

The Tezuka Osamu Manga Museum in Takarazuka, Hyogo Prefecture, is currently holding an exhibit to commemorate the 35th anniversary of Macross and 10th anniversary of Macross Frontier. Titled “Macross: The Art 1982-2018“, the exhibit includes sections dedicated to each animated entry in the franchise (yes, including Macross 2), Macross the First, and a selection of Macross Frontier artwork and sketches. It also contains a large VF-31 and YF-29 in Battroid form, as well as collaboration art (Macross characters rendered in a “Tezuka” style, and a Frontier piece by Risa Ebata inspired by the world-famous Takarazuka Revue.

Several cafes and restaurants around the museum are holding collaborations with the exhibit, offering Macross-themed foods (Pineapple cake, anyone?) and collectible coasters.

While photos were not permitted throughout the majority of the exhibit, the following is a gallery taken around the museum itself as well as a few specific areas that did permit photography.

Passionate Oshare Macross Delta 2018

Passionate Oshare Macross Delta, the latest in the long series of Macross-themes pop-up shops, opened at the Shinjuku Marui Annex department store on August 25th and will run until September 10.

Despite there being no special guests or autograph sessions scheduled, this Oshare Macross has proven to be extremely popular (as mentioned on the SpeakerPODcast) with some items selling out on day 1 and nearly all items having sold out within its first 5 days of operation.

The following are some pics that the we managed to get on day 2 (we were unable to get in on opening day) while some of the merchandise was still in stock.

Wonder Festival 2018 Summer

The summer edition of Wonder Festival was held on Sunday, July 29 at Makuhari Messe. Not even an impending typhoon could damped the crowds the stood in line for hours to check out all the latest toys and garage kits. Macross had a smaller official presence at the show this time, as opposed to in Winter when Max Factory’s 1:20 scale VF-1 stole the show. Nor was Bandai’s 1:48 scale DX Chogokin VF-1J on the show floor, despite being adorning shop fronts around Akihabara as of late last week. Arcadia was back in fine form though, and prototypes of the previously teased the 1:1 scale Sheryl and Ranko figures made quite a splash.

On the garage-kit side of things, Wonder Festival delivered once again with some amazing offerings, not the least of which was a completed kit of the Sigur Berrentzs from Macross Delta.

As with the photos from last Wonder Festival, the following 3 galleries are split between (1)Macross and mecha, (2)Anime & video games, and (3)Original works. Enjoy!

DX Chogokin VF-1J

With preorders for Bandai’s recently unveiled 1:48 scale DX Chogokin VF-1J opening today, multiple stores in Akihabara have displays set up to show off the upcoming toy to curious shoppers. Akihabara Yodobashi Camera in particular had an entire wall dedicated to it – including a video interview with Shoji Kawamori, and samples of other recent Chogokin Macross products.

Being an iconic, well-known design, the VF-1J displays were pulling quite a bit of foot traffic as suited salarymen stopped to reminisce over it.

The DX Chogokin VF-1J will release this December. Did you get your preorder in?

Shizuoka Hobby Show 2018

The Annual Shizuoka Hobby Show was held from May 10-13, with the first two days being business days and the second two being open to the public. While much of the hype surrounding the show often involves model kit companies announcing the newest and hottest upcoming kits, the public days offer serious model builders the chance to show off their talents. In past years, many Macross fans have come across photos online of the work of a modeling group called the “VF-1 Riders” – a collective of Japanese Macross modelers who focus primarily on valkyrie model kits and customs.

Enter Jefuemon. The only westerner to participate in the VF-1 Riders group, he is a long-time modeling enthusiast and what can only be described as a hardcore Macross fan. He sent us in the following report and photo gallery from this year’s hobby show, which can also be found over at his blog along with updates on his latest projects.
