Transformers 35th Anniversary Exhibition

Part art exhibit, part toy display, part promotion for the upcoming Japanese release of the Bumblebee movie on March 22, “The World of Transformers – 35th Anniversary Exhibition” opened at Ikebukuro Parco Department Store last week.

Focusing primarily on Transformer box art, with a smattering of other designs, from the 80’s and 90’s, the exhibit will run until April 1 and is only 700 yen to get in to. The bulk of the art from the exhibit has also been compiled into an event book which, at this point in time, is only available from the event itself. Photography was permitted in most areas of the exhibit however, and the following are a few shots we snapped.

SpeakerPODcast Ep.123 – How much news can we fit in a single podcast?

This was supposed to be our Wonder Festival 2019 (Winter) podcast. And I guess it still is. Sort of.

But there’s a whole lot of news to get through first! Not to mention Cassie & Mary joining us to talk about the Oshare Macross Boys popup shop. We also attend the Macross Frontier 10th Anniversary Gorgeous, Delicious, Deculture Festival to hear about what it was like to be a Misa fan 37 years ago and the third love interest that was cut from Macross Frontier: The Wings of Farewell.

Oh, and did we mention that Sharon Apple is BACK?!

Oshare Macross Gaiden: Macross Boys Popup Shop

The latest in the ongoing series of Macross pop-up shops, “Oshare Macross Gaiden: Macross Boys” is being held at Shinjuku Marui Annex Department Store from February 8 through to February 25.

While the majority of the popup shops over the past couple of years have focused on Walkure (with a couple of Fortier-themed ones, albeit primarily over in the Kyoto/Osaka area), this one focuses on the male characters of the Macross franchise, although Shin, Hikaru, Hibiki, Basara, Gamlin, Michael and Hayate are conspicuously absent from the lineup. Maybe there’s room for a Macross Boys sequel? Only time will tell. For now, here are our pics from the current shop. Enjoy!

Shoji Kawamori on What is, and What is NOT, “Canon”

Originally Written by Renato on February 25, 2009

Fans all around the world tear their hair out over which version of which story in the Macross franchise is the “real” one, and which is the “dramatization” or “parallel world” version of events…. In Japan, most fans are rather chill. Why not just relax, everybody? Just over 20 years ago, Shoji Kawamori was kind enough to sit down and answer some fan questions, and among them, he gave us some insight into his philosophy of media-based storytelling. The takeaway from all this, is… You’re thinking about it too hard.

The following is part of a transcript from an interview with Shoji Kawamori on “Macross 7 Fun Net” from September 24th, 1998.
